The Dolls – Interview to writer, producer and director David Wilde

Today, a new interview with David Wilde, a writer, producer and director behind the horror/sexy movie Psycho Sex Dolls.

Do you mind introducing yourself to our readers and users?

Hi, I’m David Wilde. A writer-Producer, Director

You just launched a fundraiser to make “Dolls”, the sequel to “Psycho Sex Dolls”. Can you tell us about this project?

“The Dolls” is the sequel in this franchise. “Psycho Sex Dolls” was the first film. About a filmmaker that gets three realistic sex androids to try and save his dying porn studio. The three dolls in the film are now in London after escaping as sex slaves. One of them “Mia” has an advanced AI Processor, so she learns more in a day than a human does in a year.

She’s on a mission to achieve great wealth, influence and power for an end goal, which is revealed across the franchise of 3-5 films. To start the spark, she starts making money by opening a lapdancing club called “The Dolls” So she can attract and blackmail wealthy and powerful men. It’s also a storage space for sex androids that she has rescued from owners. She exploits them and uses them to help build her empire.

It’s not just like a series of sequels with the same story, it’s got a full story arc until an end goal like a series, but it’s feature films that also stand alone.

Who are the actresses involved?

The actresses from “Psycho Sex Dolls” are Stella Paris as the main lead “Mia” And Jamie Jones and Emma Cole as the other two leads. I never did conventional casting in this film. Stella had done some acting in movies, but she also worked as a model on basestation and other modelling work. She also juggles a lot, so I wrote the part with her in mind.

Jamie & Emma are also adult performers and they are all great in the first film, so they’re coming back for “The Dolls” I’ll have a lot more support cast too, which I will start casting soon.

What is the biggest challenge to making a low budget/indie movie?

Most people would say it’s getting the film made. And yes, that is a challenge, but the BIGGEST challenge for me, and most filmmakers, is at the other end. Making films that eventually make money, so you can continue to make more and build and grow.

Turning it into a creative business is my long term goal. Which is why I’m building a franchise with a commercial genre. Most people can make films now, with whatever budget you have. The challenge is to make a living at it and grow to be able to self fund. I’m determined to pull this end off too.

What are your main sources of inspiration in terms of cinema?

I have been inspired from everywhere. From Martin
Scorsese, to Roger Corman and Larry Cohen, and even erotic filmmakers like Joe Sarno and Jess Franco. On a whole though, we live in an insane world, so inspiration also comes from the times we live in. Reflecting the fears and concerns of today, even in an exploitation horror movie. Which good horrors usually do.

What has been your favorite project until now and why?

All my features and shorts have all been a learning curve to learn to be a filmmaker. If I had to pick though, I would probably say “Psycho Sex Dolls” Mainly because it was such a great cast and small crew.
The main reason, I wrote a film that was mean’t to be a micro budget exploitation film, and I pretty much got what I intended. Unlike my first £300,000 industry movie that was not a good experience. Also, “Psycho Sex Dolls” the spark to this bigger franchise that I’m confident that I can pull off. So it also feels that I’m starting a creative business too. It’s not just making a film and forgetting about it. It’s building a universe.

How much are important the use of social media for the promotion of a low budget movie?

It’s paramount. Simply because of this. When Hollywood makes a film, or even the big Indies, they still spend the same amount of money on marketing as they spent on the movies
production. And these films have names in them. They don’t just throw the film on a streamer and hope for the best because it stars Brad Pitt.

If you just put your film on a streamer with no names in it, or even with some faces. You’re dead! Invisible. I had a taste of the old world before the web and now this. Getting your film to an audience is 50%. Also, it’s not just about how many followers you gather on social. Followers don’t have the same weight anymore.

102 funded the production of “Psycho Sex Dolls” and the vast majority had never followed me on social before. They came via kickstarter and word of mouth. The algorithm has changed. I can put a post on Tik Tok one day and get 50 views. Next day 1000, but some of those thousand go to my “Psycho Sex Dolls” website and join the mail list and by a Blu-ray or Merch. Some have also converted to investors in the thousands each.

Without social, you’re dead. I think you also have to put yourself out there as the filmmaker. Which I do. Share all your rawness, success and failures. It’s not just about gathering vanity metrics. You need to be engaged and involve people in what you are doing. If you don’t, you’re just another film in a vast sea of films. Build your global niche via your mail list.

Besides the horror genre, have you worked on other genres? Have you ever thought about making a softcore horror comedy?

My first film was a comedy in the US. Then I made a few crime films, and a horror movie in the US. As for softcore comedy. I would say “Psycho Sex Dolls” is pretty close to that. “The Dolls” is more erotic horror.

Hey, I love genre films, so I would always like switch to other genres. I also have an action movie I’m trying to get made, but if I pull that off, thats a budget in the £15m range. At this time, building my franchise with these dolls movies is the focus.

Next projects after Dolls?

The 3rd film in the Dolls franchise would be set in Las Vegas-Los Angeles. I want to get two of these films made a year. Also, some smaller shorts I have made for an anthology and the bigger budget action flick.
